Jim Roche, President and Chief Executive Officer

Jim is President and CEO of CANARIE. He is a successful entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of leadership experience, having been a founding member and General Manager at Newbridge Networks Corporation (now Alcatel-Lucent), a co-founder and CEO of Tundra Semiconductor (now IDT), the CEO of CMC Microsystems and the founder and CEO of Stratford Managers, a company he continues to lead.

In addition to his corporate duties, he serves on numerous boards and committees including the board of Ocean Networks Canada, the ICT Advisory Board for DFAIT, the Committee of Research Partnerships for NSERC, the Expert Panel on Business Innovation for CCA and others. He is also an Executive-in-Residence at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa and is frequently called on to speak about entrepreneurship, commercialization of innovation, and strategy development.

Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University, where he graduated at the top of his class and won multiple scholarships. He has added to his management skills through intensive programs at Stanford, Ivey, Queen’s and elsewhere.

Nancy E. Carter, Chief Financial Officer

Nancy joined CANARIE in 1997 as a financial analyst and has filled the role of Chief Financial Officer since April 2007. In her role as CFO, Nancy is responsible for the overall accountability of the entire organization, which includes the administration of CANARIE's current five-year, $120-million funding program. She also assumes all of CANARIE's human resource responsibilities and liaises with counsel on legal issues. Prior to CANARIE, Nancy was an accountant for E.B. Eddy and Scott Paper for 10 years.

Nancy has a life-long passion for higher learning. After completing a business diploma from Algonquin College, she earned the professional designation of Certified General Accountant in 1997. Nancy is now studying law part-time at the University of Ottawa, in the faculty of common law. She expects to graduate with her law degree in 2012.

Nancy, a native Montrealer, raised her two children in Ottawa, while volunteering for many community organizations, including the Scouts, Girl Guides and a Tall Ship Sail Training Program. She is also an avid runner and frequently participates in races in the Capital region.

Jim Ghadbane, Chief Technology Officer

Jim Ghadbane has held a number of management positions at local Ottawa firms over the past 20 years. Most recently, he was vice president, Product Management at Bridgewater Systems. Prior to that he was VP of R&D for Ceyba Corporation, and VP & general manager of Network and Service Management at Alcatel Corporation. He was an early employee at Newbridge Networks Corporation where he held a number of management positions in the ATM, Internetworking and TDM areas and helped the company grow to over 5000 employees and revenues over $1B. Jim is a co-inventor on ATM switching and long haul optical transmission patents.

He is currently a member of the board of directors for a local bio-medical start up, as well as business advisor to a number of other firms.

Kathryn Anthonisen, Vice-President, External Relations

Kathryn joined CANARIE as Director of Communications in 2009. Since then, her responsibility and role have evolved, and she is now Vice President, External Relations. In this role, she is responsible for all aspects of marketing and communications, as well as CANARIE’s relationships with national and global stakeholders, partners, and peer networks.

Prior to joining CANARIE, Kathryn held a variety of senior roles in marketing and communications, including Vice President Marketing, in the private sector. Earlier in her career she was an instructor and program administrator at Humber College in Toronto.

Kathryn earned her B.A. at McGill University and her M.B.A. from Schulich School of Business. She has added to her skills through ongoing training in leadership development, project management, and French. She lives in Ottawa with her husband and two daughters, where she takes advantage of Ottawa’s extensive bike paths to commute to work until the snow flies, when she switches to skates and glides home on the canal.

Peter Wilenius, Vice-President, Business Development

Peter brings to CANARIE more than 25 years of executive responsibility for strategic planning, global marketing, business development, investor relations, and mergers and acquisitions. Peter has extensive experience in guiding emerging technology companies in business planning, channel development and marketing strategies.

He has launched a number of new products and managed large strategic relationships for public companies such as March Networks Corporation and for bio-medical start-ups such as Biopeak Corp and XiTec Inc.

Peter holds a B.A. Honours (Economics) from Carleton University and a M.B.A from Queen’s University.
