Connecting to eduroam at CANARIE

What is eduroam?

eduroam or education roaming, provides roaming wireless network access for students, staff and faculty at partner institutions. Users are able to authenticate using the same credentials as they would at their home institution or office. Staff members at CANARIE, therefore, can use their CANARIE user ID to gain access to the eduroam service at affiliated institutions. Likewise, other institution members can access the CANARIE eduroam service using their usual credentials.

When logging into eduroam users must attach a realm name in order to identify their home institution. CANARIE users would append @canarie.ca to their CANARIE user ID when logging into any eduroam service. For example enter johndoe@canarie.ca if johndoe was the CANARIE user ID. Realm identifiers must always be included when using eduroam.

Eligibility

All staff at CANARIE can use the eduroam service at all institutes that support eduroam. A complete list of member institutions can be found here.

Getting Connected – Instructions

Each operating system will have a somewhat different configuration. Below are links to detailed instructions for each supported operating system.

For other Operating Systems we include this general information:

  • Network/SSID: eduroam (you may have to manually type this in)
  • Network Authentication Method: WPA2 (sometimes called WPA2 Enterprise)
  • Data Encryption Method: AES
  • EAP Type: PEAP
  • Authentication Protocol: MS-CHAP-V2

What are the restrictions of eduroam?

CANARIEs’ eduroam service is intended to be used by visitors from other participating institutions. CANARIE staff must continue to use the CANStaff wireless network already provided.

The network restrictions placed on eduroam is at the discretion of the institution providing the service. At this time CANARIE provides full access to the Internet, with the exception of a small number of protocols that have been deemed a security risk. There is no guarantee that eduroam will provide the same access to resources as the home or visited institution’s standard wireless networks.

Help and Support

Users wishing to connect to eduroam must acquire support from their home institution only. Institutions hosting eduroam connectivity are not required to provide support to visiting guest users. For CANARIE staff, please contact Malcolm Bartlett at malcolm@canarie.ca for any questions or problems that may be encountered when trying to use the eduroam service.

Appropriate Use

Users of the eduroam network must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy of both CANARIE and the home/visiting institution. Please review the CANARIE Acceptable Use Policy.
