Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can we still participate in the pilot?
The pilot phase of the program is fully subscribed, and the next phase of DAIR will be communicated at the end of the first quarter of 2012. Please indicate your interest in participating in the post-pilot phase of DAIR here.
  2. Can you tell me what the next phase of the DAIR program will look like?
CANARIE is reviewing the outcome of the pilot phase, the demand for this type of program, and results provided by DAIR participants to develop the next phase of the program. For more information that highlights participant interviews, here are the links to press release and video. Please indicate your interest in participating in the next phase, and provide input on what DAIR can do to improve your time to market in the test and development stage here.
  3. Who do I contact if I have technical questions about CANARIE’s DAIR Program?
Please forward your questions to dair@canarie.ca.
  4. How do is CANARIE’s DAIR Program accessed?
For organizations that have access to CANARIE already via other regional advanced networks (ORANs) or GigaPOP, they will be able to access the resources via the existing connectivity. For other organizations, access via a virtual private network (VPN) will be enabled. In both cases additional security credentials will be issued to allow the organizations to allocate and schedule testbed resources.
  5. Are there (or will there be) any costs for users to access CANARIE’s DAIR Program?
For the duration of the pilot program there will be no charges for use of DAIR. If, as we expect, this progresses to a large scale deployment in 2012 and beyond, we may require some form of cost recovery from commercial enterprises. This will be highly dependent on the demand for the service. Please show your interest and provide input to what the program could do for you here.
  6. What kind of support or equipment do we need to have at “our” end?
During the pilot phase, organizations that are already connected to CANARIE there will be no additional equipment requirements. For those who must connect into DAIR via a VPN, then either VPN clients or a VPN firewall will be needed.
  7. What kind of support will I have at “your” end during the pilot phase of DAIR?
CANARIE provides support for the CANARIE provided hardware and software components in DAIR to ensure that the service is highly reliable. The objective during the pilot phase is 99.9% availability. In addition, training is available and staff will be available to answer questions and help establish test environments.
  8. How long can I use CANARIE’s DAIR Pilot Program?
During the pilot phase, a test environment is a set of images with a configuration that specifies the number of instances and the connectivity between those images along with the storage requirements. The images and the configuration for the test environment will be saved indefinitely within DAIR or until explicitly deleted by the user. A testbed environment can be instantiated on demand by a user via a web interface or an XML based API.

Requests will have a duration associated with them in terms of hours that a test environment is needed. If we find that demand exceeds our capacity during the pilot phase we may be forced to limit the number of hours of resource usage per month per organization, in order to ensure system performance.
  9. How easy is it to connect?
Very simple. Please refer to the sections above on access and equipment needs
  10. Will others be able to observe my work?
No. Each test environment will be segregated from all others at the network computing and storage levels. Credentials such as a certificate will need to be presented in order to access DAIR. Only those resources allocated to those credentials will be accessible.
