Users Forum 2011

October 26 – 27, 2011
National Arts Centre, Ottawa

Canada’s research, education and innovation leaders are working to ensure Canada has the digital infrastructure it needs to compete, and thrive, on the world stage.

CANARIE is funded by the Government of Canada in five-year mandates. We are in the final year of our current mandate. As CANARIE works towards its mandate renewal in a period of severe fiscal restraint, your participation at the Users’ Forum is critical to shaping the evolution of the network and ensuring decision-makers in government understand that CANARIE is a key element of the fundamental digital infrastructure supporting Canadian innovation and discovery.

Dr. Gilles Patry, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, kicked off the Forum with a keynote speech on October 26. The Ontario Council of University Research also aligned its fall meeting with the CANARIE Users’ Forum, so the Vice Presidents of Research from Ontario universities joined us for the meeting and dinner on October 26.

During the Forum, participants actively participated in shaping the evolution of the CANARIE network. They also find out how to support CANARIE’s mandate renewal efforts and ensure their voices were heard by decision-makers involved in CANARIE’s renewal funding.

Breakout Sessions

We had three breakout groups. The three breakout sessions corresponded to the three key elements of our renewal proposal:

1. Network Evolution = Evolve the Network to Meet Growing Demand

  • Increase network bandwidth to address the trend of data-intensive research
  • Expand the network to connect additional institutions
  • Provide funding support to help our provincial partners develop network infrastructure and services

2. Technology Innovation = Build Network Tools to Speed Time to Discovery

  • Develop a generic cloud-based research environment with a simple interface – a research “browser” that builds on the innovations of the Network-Enabled Platforms Program
  • Create discipline-specific software plug-ins (e.g., health, social sciences) based on existing Network-Enabled Platform research tools, to enhance researcher productivity
  • Cultivate the next generation of Green IT by building on existing investments and supporting made-in-Canada solutions

3. Commercialization of ICT Research = Leverage the Network to Commercialize Innovation

  • Fully implement the Digital Accelerator for Innovation and Research (DAIR) Program, expanding access to a robust R&D environment where digital innovators can develop, refine, validate and demonstrate innovative products and services, and move them quickly to market.
