About CANARIE's Network Alliance Programs

Canada's advanced network alliance is made up of twelve provincial and territorial networks and CANARIE.

In each province and territory, the network alliance partner provides high-speed connections directly to institutions within the province or territory. The provincial and territorial networks connect to the CANARIE national backbone to enable collaboration with peers across the country. Through CANARIE's connections to 100 global advanced networks, CANARIE provides users with access to international data and tools.

Together, we provide ultra-high-speed, fibre-optic connectivity linking researchers, educators, and innovators to research resources across the country and around the world, such as:

  • enormous data sets like DNA sequences (the average human genome is 3,000 MB)
  • real-time, high-definition video streams like those used in telemedicine
  • complex data sets like climate models

The purpose of CANARIE’s Network Alliance programs is to strengthen the pan-Canadian network and raise the visibility of how this essential digital infrastructure supports research, education, and innovation that benefit all Canadians.

CANARIE has two network alliance programs: the Network Alliance Infrastructure (NAI) program and the Network Alliance Development (NAD) program.

These programs are restricted to ORANs.
