Canarie - Mandate Renewal

CANARIE is up for Renewal

CANARIE receives funding from the Government of Canada in five-year mandates. CANARIE uses these funds to:

  • expand the ultra high-speed, high-capacity research network to more users,
  • offer additional services that enhance the effectiveness of research in Canada,
  • fund research projects that promote research collaboration, and
  • support Canadian entrepreneurs in developing and validating new digital products and services.

Our current mandate expires in March 2012. Work with us to ensure Canadians have the right digital tools to compete, collaborate and thrive on the world stage.

CANARIE recommends evolving the network in three areas that will have the greatest positive impact on research, education and innovation across Canada.

1    Evolve the Network to Meet Growing Demand

  • Increase network bandwidth to address the trend of data-intensive research
  • Expand the network to connect additional institutions
  • Provide core network funding assistance to support regional digital equity

2    Build Network Tools to Speed Time
    to Discovery

  • Develop a generic cloud-based research environment with a simple interface – a research “browser”
  • Create discipline-specific plug-ins (e.g., health, social sciences) based on existing research platforms, to enhance researcher productivity
  • Cultivate the next generation of Green IT by building on existing investments and supporting made-in-Canada solutions

3    Leverage the Network to Commercialize
   Innovation

  • Fully implement the Digital Accelerator for Innovation and Research (DAIR) Program, expanding access to a robust R&D environment where digital innovators can develop, refine, validate and demonstrate innovative products and services, and move them quickly to market

With CANARIE’s advanced digital infrastructure, anything is possible! Without it? Canadian research and innovation are at risk.
