CANARIE applauds the Government of Canada for the release of Digital Canada 150, Canada’s digital economy plan. We believe the 5 pillar plan will strengthen Canada’s digital economy and continue to better position Canada in the digital world. Additionally, CANARIE appreciates the Government’s acknowledgement of its Digital Accelerator for Innovation and Research (DAIR) program as an enabler of economc opportunity for Canadian businesses.
As Minister Moore highlighted in his message, “We are living in a transformational digital age where there are few jobs, few sectors and few aspects of our lives that remain untouched by digital technologies.” CANARIE echoes this sentiment and understands that digital technologies have led to a paradigm shift in which digital data are our new “natural resource,” powering a tremendous range of opportunities to compete and win in the global digital economy.
Some notable initiatives announced as part of Digital Canada 150 that will position Canada to seize opportunities for leadership include:
- Enabling broadband and connectivity projects to receive federal Government support under the Building Canada Fund, this will enable connectivity for more Canadians
- Investing an additional $200 million to support small and medium-sized businesses in adopting digital technologies; and
- Developing an Open Science policy to facilitate open access to the publications and related data resulting from federally funded research.
CANARIE looks forward to working with its broad, multi-sector community, and the Government of Canada to help realize the Digital Canada 150 vision.
