CANARIE and Compute Canada Showcase Joint Suite of High Performance Computing, Network and Software Tools at Supercomputing 2013

CANARIE, a vitalcomponent of Canada’s digital infrastructure supporting research, education and innovation, and Compute Canada, Canada’s national high performance computing platform for research, are showcasing their suite of powerful computing, research middleware and network tools at a joint exhibit at this year’s Supercomputing Conference, SC13.


Spotlighting the most advanced scientific and technical applications in the world, SC13 brings together the international high performance computing (HPC) community for what promises to be an exceptional program.

At Booth #419, Compute Canada and CANARIE will demonstrate applications of their powerful platform currently in use by the scientific community in the fields of cellular research, astronomy, neuroscience and astrophysics. This research leverages CANARIE’s high-speed network and Research Middleware, together with Compute Canada’s distributed HPC facilities:

  • Interactive 3D Visualizations of Big Data Research Projects:Brian Corrie, Visualization Coordinator for WestGrid, a regional division within Compute Canada, will be demonstrating the capabilities of an IQ Station, an immersive 3D display system that uses 3D tracking to enable immersive interaction with large, complex data sets. One of the big data projects he will be showcasing features the visualization of cell biology models used in cancer research and for studying the spread of HIV in vulnerable populations.
  • 3D Brain Image Processing: Through the Global Brain Imaging Research Network (GBRAIN) Research Platform of McGill University’s Montreal Neurological Institute, funded by CANARIE, visitors to the booth will witness the ease by which neurologists can send sophisticated magnetic resonance (MR) images of the human brain for analysis on one of many Compute Canada HPC centres. Visitors to the booth will also gain access to the resulting detailed, interactive views of the human brain from the GBRAIN Research Platform.
  • Real-time Views of AstronomicalImages: Through a web-based demonstration, booth visitors will see one-of-a-kind images of our universe produced by international telescopes, processed through Compute Canada’s HPC Centres, and visualized through the CANARIE-funded Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research (CANFAR) platform developed at the University of Victoria.
  • Visualization of Astrophysical Data from the Square Kilometer Array (SKA): Through a web­ based demonstration of the CyberSKA’s research platform interface developed at the University of Calgary, visitors will gain insights on how the unprecedented quantities for astrophysical data collected by the SKA over the next decade will be efficiently and effectively collected, stored, transformed, analyzed, and re-used by collaborating scientists around the world.

“The national foundations of Canada’s digital infrastructure, Compute Canada and CANARIE, enable the scientific community to leverage Big Data produced by their research to accelerate breakthroughs that will improve our lives,” said Jim Ghadbane, President and CEO of CANARIE.

“The research being showcased at our Supercomputing booth, which leverage the leading edge technologies, expertise and resources available through each of our organizations, are compelling examples of how Compute Canada and CANARIE’s strong, collaborative working relationship is supporting exciting new discoveries and innovation within Canada’s research community,” said Jill Kowalchuk, President of Compute Canada.

The exhibit is taking place from November 18- 21 at the Colorado Convention Centre.
