Director, Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise, University of Ottawa
Joe Irvine started his career in academic research in molecular biology and medical genetics before becoming interested in technology commercialization. After helping launch two firms in Ottawa, he worked as a business development officer at the University of Guelph. Subsequently, he served in several research management and business development roles at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, including technology licensing and new venture creation.
For the past decade, he has served as Director, Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise (TTBE) at the University of Ottawa, where he has overseen the growth of Research Partnerships, Technology Partnerships and entrepreneurship support activities, including the launch of over sixty new firms. In 2010 TTBE launched the Start-up Garage program for student entrepreneurs.
Joe has served on the boards of both Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI) and Invest Ottawa, and the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation. In 2014 Joe received the AUTM Award for Outstanding Service to the Canadian Technology Transfer Community. Joe currently serves on the board of two uOttawa start-up companies and as COO of a third new venture.
He received a MSc and BSc (Hons) from Queen’s University and an MBA from the University of Ottawa.
