Alys Brett

Alys Brett

Head of the Software Engineering Group, UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA)

Keynote Speaker

Alys Brett is Head of the Software Engineering Group at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) which runs the UK’s national nuclear fusion research laboratory and related technology facilities. She studied physics and was involved in particle cosmology research before becoming a software developer, initially for the University of Oxford. Alys joined UKAEA ten years ago to work on experimental data systems for the Joint European Torus (JET) experiment – the largest fusion reactor in the world. She now leads the group providing data access, analysis and visualisation tools for JET and collaborating with scientists and engineers on software. Alys works to coordinate and improve how software is developed at UKAEA in fields ranging from plasma modelling to robotic control systems.

She became involved in the wider UK research software community through a fellowship with the Software Sustainability Institute and is currently joint-chair of the UK Research Software Engineers Association working to improve access to software engineering expertise in research.
