Cybersecurity Services

Initiatives that are funded through the Cybersecurity Initiatives Program (CIP):

  • Support the evolution of a complementary set of capabilities at all layers – from local to national – to collectively enhance the overall cybersecurity posture of the sector
  • Address priorities or gaps with the greatest potential to strengthen cybersecurity across the broadest portion of the ecosystem
  • Deliver benefits to all eligible organizations, regardless of size, region, or existing capabilities

Currently funded initiatives available to all CIP participants:

CanSSOC Threat Feed logo

Sector-specific threat intelligence for research and education organizations.

Cyber Threat Intelligence Services aggregate and curate threat intelligence from public and private cybersecurity threat feeds into a single block/allow list that you can deploy directly into your existing firewall. The service also includes monitoring and reporting services to help identify and mitigate potential threats originating from the dark web, and provides access to community threat sharing through monthly calls, bulletins, and a 24/7 national collaboration forum.

NCA Logo

A service that provides an annual, comprehensive assessment of your organization’s cybersecurity capabilities and capacities against the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

The NCA:

  • identifies your organization’s cybersecurity maturity and placement relative to your peers, and identify common, sector-wide strengths and priorities for support.
  • helps inform your organization’s cybersecurity plans and investment strategies
  • identifies cybersecurity gaps at the regional and national levels to guides future cybersecurity investments

CUCCIO Logo

A service that assesses and compares research and post-secondary organizations’ cybersecurity processes and performance to promote evidence-based best practices.

The service includes:

  • Continuous security monitoring of participating organizations (Bitsight/Shodan)
  • Benchmarking the cybersecurity performance of Canadian research and education (R&E) organizations based on targeted surveys and Bitsight data.
  • Access to Bitsight vendor reports

CIRA DNS Firewall Logo

Note: Funding for the CIRA DNS Firewall ends on March 31, 2026. As a result, new applications are no longer being accepted.

A simple-to-implement and powerful tool that protects campus networks by adding an extra layer of protection to existing safeguards by:

  • Blocking/redirecting users (and bots) from malicious domains such as those that contain malware or are engaged in phishing
  • Aggregating threat data to allow/deny traffic based on new intelligence, and
  • Facilitating research from new intelligence to identify new threats

CIRA DNS Firewall off-network Logo

Note: Funding for the CIRA Off-Network Protection services ends on March 31, 2026. As a result, new applications are no longer being accepted.

CIRA’s off-network protection feature is designed to extend the protection of CIRA’s DNS Firewall to users’ devices wherever they are accessing the internet beyond campus networks.

By securing laptops, phones and tablets, off-network protection can help support campus faculty and staff in hybrid and remote working and learning environments.
