Participate in the National Cybersecurity Assessment
The National Cybersecurity Assessment (NCA) is now open. The new questionnaire is simpler and faster to complete, using a clear 1:1 mapping to NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 subcategories, which helps organizations better understand how their answers connect to the framework.
The assessment also includes clearer descriptions of maturity levels, making it easier to choose the right answer. Organizations in the R&E community are invited to register and take part. By participating, you can learn more about your cybersecurity maturity and help build a stronger community.
Threat Intelligence Platform Migration
CANARIE is preparing for the upcoming migration of its Threat Intelligence Platform (TIP), based on MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform), as part of the continued evolution of its national cybersecurity services. This transition will see the platform move from infrastructure currently hosted in collaboration with McGill to a CANARIE-managed environment, strengthening CANARIE’s agility in supporting the evolving needs of the community. As a core component of the CanSSOC Threat Feed service, MISP plays a critical role in enabling the timely sharing, enrichment, and operationalization of threat intelligence across Canada’s research and education sector.
Scheduled for May 26, the migration is being carefully coordinated to minimize disruption and ensure continuity for participating institutions. CANARIE extends its sincere thanks to McGill for its longstanding partnership and support in hosting and advancing the platform to date—foundational contributions that have enabled the success and growth of the service across the community. This transition reflects CANARIE’s broader commitment to enhancing the reliability, accessibility, and scalability of shared cybersecurity services while enabling more effective collaboration across the sector.
Bytes Of Experience – Stronger Together Podcast
Axel Schulz, Director of Cybersecurity Operations at CANARIE, was recently a featured guest on in the Bytes of Experience podcast series—bringing a national perspective to conversations on cybersecurity collaboration across Canada’s R&E community. In the episode, Axel reflects on his journey and the evolution of shared cybersecurity services, reinforcing the importance of “shifting collaboration left”—embedding partnership, trust, and collective problem-solving earlier in the lifecycle to strengthen outcomes across the sector. His insights highlight how proactive, coordinated engagement across institutions and jurisdictions continues to be foundational to building resilient and scalable cybersecurity capabilities.
This series highlights the power of dialogue in shaping shared understanding, and we extend sincere thanks to Bo and Dana for creating a thoughtful platform that brings these important conversations to life. Their commitment to fostering open, experience-driven discussions helps advance a culture of collaboration across the community. Axel’s contribution is a strong reflection of this collective mindset, – demonstrating how shifting collaboration left can accelerate impact and help the sector move forward together.
CANARIE at CANHEIT
CANARIE will be actively participating in the upcoming CANHEIT conference in Waterloo (June 1–4), with series of sessions that showcase how national collaboration is driving real-world impact across the R&E cybersecurity community. From interactive presentations to panel discussions and case studies, CANARIE’s sessions will highlight the evolution of shared services such as threat intelligence, national cybersecurity assessments, and emerging community platforms, – demonstrating how collective action is strengthening institutional readiness and resilience across Canada.
CANARIE is proud to be part of CANHEIT—one of the sector’s premier community events—where peers from across Canada come together to share ideas, build connections, and advance innovation in higher education IT. This year’s conference in Waterloo offers a unique opportunity to engage with a vibrant and collaborative community, and CANARIE looks forward to contributing to the conversations, learning alongside partners, and continuing to strengthen the relationships that underpin our shared success.
